Business Studies
The department is made up of three experienced members of staff with commercial and industrial experience: Head of Department, Business Studies Teacher and Business and Enterprise Administrator.
The department is located in two dedicated business classrooms both with full ICT suites and interactive whiteboards.
As part of our Specialist School Status the department also has access to a professional business suite. This includes a receptions area, meetings rooms, interview rooms and a further ICT suite. The facilities in the Business Centre are also used for regional school meetings and training events. They are also available for hire by the wider community.
A range of business related subjects are taught at Key Stage 4 including vocational courses. Key Stage 4 students are able to choose from GCSE Business Studies, Applied Business Studies and BTEC Business Studies.
Business Studies pupils visit a variety of business environments, which ever course they choose. These educational visits enhance pupil learning and develop a real appreciation of Business and Enterprise.
Year 10 Business Studies pupils visit to Cadbury World Factory

This visit included the standard tourist tour of the factory and attractions with the addition of a session specifically targeting at marketing. This photo shows the pupils learning about marketing from one of Cadbury’s own marketing staff.
Pupil Visit to Toyota
The pupils have also visited Toyota Manufacturing plant in Derby. This visit supports the pupils learning in the production methods as part of their studies. The real life experience of the “Just in Time” production method and production line emphasises the learning which has already taken place in the class room. Supporting the pupils learning with real life situations means that pupils find it easy to recall this information at a later date.

Information delivered by the Toyota staff supports pupils learning in the classroom
Many of our other partners support the school by offering visits to their premises and visiting the school to talk to pupils during lessons. A recent example is the owner of the Domino’s Pizza Franchise who visited our Business Studies lesson to compare the set up of his own business with the GCSE case study.
