Enterprise Days

We have developed a programme of Enterprise activities which are high impact, cost effective and sustainable.  Our cross curriculum theme ensures that Enterprise is not just the focus of individual sessions but a culture which runs throughout.  In addition to other activities each year group has a full day devoted to developing enterprise skills.

Projects are designed to develop enterprise in all of our pupils:

  • Do I cope with success and failure?
  • Do I work well as part of a team and on my own?
  • Do I come up with original ideas?
  • Do I communicate effectively with others?
  • Do I know my own strengths and weaknesses?
  • Do I show enthusiasm for learning?
  • Do I think for myself?
  • Do I evaluate my work and identify ways to improve?
  • Do I take responsibility for my actions?
  • Do I show initiative?

The programme is varied each year. below are a few examples of recent activities:

Enterprise Outdoor Challenge Event

Year 7 pupils spend the day at an Outdoor Education Centre.  Pupils are taken in College groups of fifty pupils and split into teams of ten.  They are set a variety of tasks to earn points throughout the day.

Points are awarded for enterprise skills throughout the day.  This event develops enterprise skills but is also an important opportunity for Year 7 pupils to get to know each other outside of the classroom environment and supports the transition from Primary to Secondary School.

Natwest Company Challenge

This event is delivered by the Natwest as part of their “Money Sense” programme.  The pupils work in small teams to develop a catering company.  Tasks throughout the day include inventing a name for their business, a marketing campaign, designing a menu, finances and a presentation to the rest of the pupils.

This event is supported by external business mentors who work with a small group of pupils throughout the day. This photographs shows a mentor of the North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce discussing marketing ideas with a pupil from Year 8.

This is a full day’s activity which is delivered at the Ramada Hotel, Clayton, developed as a cross curriculum project for both of our Specialisms.

The management simulation exercise involves students competing as rival companies manufacturing cardboard vans to contract deadlines with strict quality control standards.  The pupils work in teams of ten to generate the most income.

This event continues to be well supported by business mentors who volunteer from across North Staffordshire.  The pupils work hard to develop the different aspects of their company throughout the day.  The aim is to help students consider the importance of industry to their lives and the career opportunities available in a manufacturing environment.
