Modern Foreign Languages
The Modern Foreign Languages department is a lively department of 6 full time and 1 part time teacher, aiming to give pupils throughout the ability range the opportunity to study at least one foreign language from French, German and Spanish to GCSE level. Results at GCSE are good and pupils are motivated by a comprehensive programme of trips and visits to venues locally and abroad. Gifted and talented pupils are offered the opportunity to study Latin and Year 9 pupils experience taster sessions in Greek, Chinese, Russian, Italian and Arabic. We are committed to developing foreign language learning in the primary schools and enjoy the help of native foreign language assistants.
A communicative approach to learning puts emphasis on the spoken language, which is practised in pair and group work. The skills of speaking, listening, reading
and writing are developed through the use of video, recorded and printed materials and ICT. All pupils are provided with a text book – the Heineman course Logo or Métro – but they should provide their own dictionary.
Pupils are given the opportunity to buy magazines in French and German, to correspond with pupils abroad via e-mail and to participate in visits to Normandy in France and the Rhineland in Germany in KS3 and in exchanges with the Limousin and our partner school in Frankfurt in KS4.
The school has been awarded combined specialist status in Languages and Business Enterprise, which will enable the department to offer applied GCSE courses in addition to Spanish and Italian.
